Let’s Talk Trade And Roster

This offseason has been moving rapidly. Everywhere, that is, except for Los Angeles. As I’m sure you know by now, the winter meetings saw Stephen Strausburg re-sign with the Nationals, Gerrit Cole sign with the Yankees, and Anthony Rendon sign with the Angels. The Dodgers signed Blake Treinen.

As it stands right now, the Dodgers will head into 2020 with just about the same group of guys as last year. While this should be enough to get them to the playoffs, it seems clear that they need to make some changes for success in the playoffs.

Since all the major free agents have been signed, its time for the Dodgers to turn to trades. They have already started discussions and there has been countless speculation.

Francisco Lindor

If this trade were to be pulled off, the main player moving would, of course, be the Indians’ shortstop, Francisco Lindor. I’ve already discussed how Lindor would play shortstop, Corey Seager could move to third, Justin Turner to first, and Muncy to second. A trade of this caliber would likely involve sending Gavin Lux to Cleveland.

As far as I see it, there are two possible deals I would be happy with. One would give the Dodgers only Lindor and would yield a smaller prospect return. The other would involve Lindor and Mike Clevenger. This one would require more prospects, but would also help the Dodgers in two areas.

Here are my two proposals:

  1. Dodgers Get: Francisco Lindor Indians Get: Gavin Lux OR Dustin May + another lower-tier prospect
  2. Dodgers Get: Francisco Lindor + Mike Clevenger Indians Get: Gavin Lux + Tony Gonsolin + Jeter Downs

Mookie Betts

Yes, the former AL MVP is on the trade block. Betts by himself will not bring back a large sum of prospects because he is simply a rental player. Instead, what the Red Sox will likely do is try to bundle Betts and David Price. Price’s outrageously high contract will lower the cost of acquiring Betts and free up money for the Red Sox. A team like the Dodgers, who have plenty of money should look at this. Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • Dodgers Get: Mookie Betts + David Price Red Sox Get: Tony Gonsolin + Jeter Downs + one lower-level prospect.

So that’s what I’m thinking. Let me know what you think about this. The main thing is the Dodgers need to do something so that October failure doesn’t carry over into the next decade.
