The Dodgers continued their amazing playing on Saturday night with a 4-0 win over the Rockies. Clayton Kershaw pitched six shutout innings and he only struggled in the first inning. Joc Pederson hit a solo home run and the Dodgers capitalized on eight walks by Rockies’ starter Tyler Chatwood in the win. The Dodgers now have a nine-game winning streak have won fifteen of their last sixteen games.
Clayton Kershaw went out to the mound on Saturday to prove that he is still the Dodgers’ Ace. He got into some trouble in the first inning but managed to escape without allowing any runs. He got the leadoff man Charlie Blackmon to line out, then he allowed back-to-back singles to DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado. After that, he walked Mark Reynolds after a nine-pitch at-bat, loading the bases. It seemed like Kershaw would give up at least two runs, but he had other plans. He got Ian Desmond to strike out swinging, then he struck out Trevor Story looking. The inning required thirty-three pitches to complete so he was unable to go as deep into games as usual.
The Dodgers began to take advantage of Tyler Chatwood in the second inning, an inning in which he walked two batters. After getting the leadoff man out, Chatwood walked Logan Forsythe and Yasiel Puig. That brought Kiké Hernández to the plate. In a 3-1 count, Chatwood threw a fastball just where Kiké likes it. Hernández hit it on the ground into left field. Forsythe scored and the Dodgers had a 1-0 lead.
The Dodgers added three runs in the third inning, two runs were given to them by Colorado. Joc Pederson led off the inning and hit the first pitch he saw over the center field wall. The fans at Dodger Stadium cheered as Pederson touched home and the Dodgers took a 2-0 lead. Chatwood then walked Justin Turner before getting Cody Bellinger to fly out. Yasmani Grandal then hit a single into right field and Raimel Tapia was unable to pick up the ball, letting it go past him. This allowed Turner to score and Grandal went to second on a very costly error by Tapia.
Chatwood got Forsythe to fly out, then the inning got much worse for Chatwood. He walked Puig, then walked Hernández, loading the bases. That brought Kershaw to the plate and Chatwood issued him a four-pitch walk, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0.
Keys To The Game:
Getting Out of Trouble:
Clayton Kershaw got into a bases-loaded jam in the first inning but he managed to escape it without the Rockies scoring any runs. He allowed back-to-back singles, then a walk with only one out. Fortunately for the Dodgers, Kershaw struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Unfortunately, the inning took 33 pitches so Kershaw was only able to go six innings instead of seven or eight.
Tyler Anderson will start for the Rockies for the first time since May 30 and Brandon McCarthy will take the mound for the Dodgers. The Dodgers will look to sweep the Rockies and extend their winning streak to ten games. The game will start at 1:10 pm PT and be televised on SportsNet LA.
