Hyun-Jin Ryu fired four scoreless innings, and Justin Turner hit a solo home run in the Dodgers’ 5-4 loss to the Brewers at Camelback Ranch. Brewers’ catcher Manny Piña hit a three-run homer off of Luis Avilan, who allowed four earned runs on Tuesday.

Ryu is still trying to re-claim his spot in the rotation after two years of injuries. He allowed only one hit in four innings, and struck out two Brewers. He also drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth inning. There were runners on the corners with two outs, when Ryu hit his single into center field off of Brewers’ starter Matt Garza.

Dave Roberts was pleased with what he saw from Ryu, saying, “We’re a better team with Ryu in the starting rotation.”

Matt Garza pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits. He also walked two batters and allowed the Dodgers to put runners in scoring position three out of his four innings. It truly would be nice if the Dodgers had been able to do something with those runners, but just like they did so often last year, they stranded them on base.

Luis Avilan relieved Ryu in the fifth inning and did not record any outs. He walked the first two batters he faced, then gave up an RBI double to Scooter Gennett. Avilan then allowed a three-run homer to Manny Piña. All five of the batters that he faced reached base, and four of them scored.

In the fifth inning, Justin Turner hit a solo home run off of Brewers reliever Neftali Feliz. It was the third baseman’s sixteenth hit of the spring and his second homer.

The Dodgers tried to make a late comeback in the eighth inning. With runners on the corners, Willie Calhoun hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Tyler Holt. Then, on a passed ball, Drew Jackson scored on a wild pitch, bringing the Dodgers within a run. The rally fell short when Bobby Wilson struck out for the third out of the eighth inning. The Dodgers went down in order in the ninth inning.

The Dodgers have an off day on Wednesday but will resume on Thursday against the Texas Rangers. Clayton Kershaw will start for the Dodgers at 4:05 pm PT. In his last start, Kershaw allowed three runs, all of them due to home runs. Alex Wood will pitch against Minor Leaguers on a back field at Camelback Ranch. Corey Seager is planning to play defense on the back fields on Thursday after feeling no pain while batting on Tuesday.
